Dan was born 1958, of Italian-American parents and has two younger sisters, Paula and Gina. His mother, Elsie, passed away in February, 2008.
He was educated at the Oak Park and River Forest High School and attended Northern Illinois University. After graduating, Castellaneta went on to work with a Chicago based comedy troupe, The Second City. Although he first made his acting debut in the film Nothing in Common, he is mostly known for his voice-acting.

Dan was once a part of The Tracey Ullman Show where, amongst many other roles and acivities, he provided the voice of Homer Simpson and eventually, various other characters that appeared in the short animated cartoons that became a regular feature on the show. The popularity of the animated shorts on the The Tracey Ullman Show resulted in the popular half-hour series known as the The Simpsons. From The Simpsons debut in December 17th, 1989, Castellaneta has provided the voice of Homer Simpson and many other Simpsons’ characters.

Dan has been providing the voices for several characters in movies, animated TV shows, and on film, including that of the Genie in Disney's animated series Aladdin, in the 2002 RPG Kingdom Hearts, also Grandpa Phil on the Nickelodeon show Hey Arnold!, and that of Jonathan on the Rugrats as well as many others.

Dan has also released 2 alums on Oglio Records. His first CD was Two Lips, which was released on February 22nd, 2000. His second CD, I Am Not Homer, was released on the April 23, 2002.

Dan has been married to actress/writer Deb Lacusta since 1987.
